Diversity Statement

SF ACBS recognizes that as an organization we have historically not been as aware of or done enough to address issues of diversity and systemic privilege. We recognize that systemic privilege and discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, indigenous heritage, immigration status, gender identity and/or expression, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, socioeconomic status, or marital/relationship status contributes to disparities in power, control, privilege, influence, and opportunities in our organization and in our community. We acknowledge that we have a lot to learn and we have work to do. We recognize that this will be a living document that may change as we learn and grow.

This is especially important to our mission, because these systemic inequities affect access to healthcare, especially therapeutic care, and the wellbeing of our community.

While the acknowledgment and intention to reduce inequities is the first step, we know that is not enough. We are committed to ongoing education and taking action steps with measurable outcomes.

Plan of Action for 2022:

  • We commit to a designated budget for our Diversity Initiatives:
  • Provide scholarships for Black, Indigenous and People of Color presenters to present and speak at the ACBS World Conference.
  • Provide funding for underrepresented groups to attend the ACBS World Conference. Scholarships will be made available to Black, Indigenous and People of Color, clinicians working in community mental health and students.

We commit to making our workshops and trainings inclusive and accessible:

  • Providing sliding scale options for underrepresented groups
  • Setting up platforms, spaces and materials in a way that are considerate of learning, developmental and physical disabilities.
  • Continuing to invite presenters of diverse backgrounds to present and offering topics that enable participants to deliver more culturally responsive therapy.

We commit to active recruitment of Board members, committee members, and volunteers that reflect the diversity of our membership.

We commit to creating space that are responsive to the needs of underrepresented and marginalized affinity groups of therapists:

  • Continue to offer an annual book or article discussion grounded in anti-racist values.
  • Continue to create opportunities for connection through networking events across the Bay Area.
  • Develop affinity consultation groups. We acknowledge there are many social and cultural identities. This year we aim to develop and host a LGBTQIA+ group and a BIPOC group. We plan to evolve and create more affinity groups to meet the needs of our community.
